Recycling changes the energy equation
European Aluminium and the Aluminum Association report that recycling aluminium requires only a small fraction of the energy needed for primary production. This sector-wide advantage is one reason secondary aluminium is central to industrial decarbonisation.
For individual projects, the relevant evidence still comes from site-level data: energy use, yield, residue management, material quality and the electricity or fuel mix used in operations.
Circularity depends on industrial capability
Collection alone does not create a circular economy. Scrap has to be identified, sorted, prepared, processed and converted into a product that industrial customers can use consistently.
This creates a role for regional processors that can combine material knowledge, traceability, environmental management and customer specifications.
A strategic resource for Europe
European policy increasingly treats high-quality scrap as a valuable secondary raw material. Keeping more aluminium in productive circulation can support resource efficiency and reduce dependence on more energy-intensive supply routes.
For Southeast Europe, the opportunity is to participate in that value chain through credible recovery, transparent data and reliable market access.
